May 23, 2004 - As Reported in cdcgvnbrisbane.net. A Phenomenon the Statue of Vigin Mary and the Crucifix wept oil and Blood. A new phenomenon occurred over a week ago at the Vietnamese Catholic Community Centre at Inala. Below is a series of events being told by our Vietnamese Chaplain – Father Joseph Liem Thanh Nguyen.

Sign

On Thursday 13th May 2004, we commemorated Mass in honour of Our Lady of Fatima. After Mass, I (Father Joseph) brought a rose to the statue of Mary (belonging to Legio Mariae, (Legion of Mary), a devout prayer group in our community) – which was kept in a glass cabinet. When I opened the door, a strong rose scent like fragrance flowed out, and I thought it came from the rose in my hand. I said one Hail Mary, left the rose on Mary’s feet and went to attend to other business.

The next day, Friday 14th May 2004, after Mass the Legio Mariae prayer group had their weekly meeting and prayers between 7 pm to 8:30 pm. The statue was brought out from the cabinet and placed on a table in the room. The members of the group and I did the usual thing and said the rosary. During the final blessing, I suddenly smelt a beautiful rose scent like fragrance and I thought it came from some fresh flowers on the table. I concluded with the final blessing to all members and left. The leader of the Curia of Legio Mariae, Maria Magdalene Chi, and others continued to pray.

The Phenomenon occurred

When the meeting ended, Maria Chi and some members, Mr Hung, Mr Thinh, and Mr Chuc were tiding the room up and carried the statue back to the cabinet. When they put the statue down, to their utter amazement, they saw oil seeping from Mary’s lips to Her chin. Her face was wet and shiny. They shouted out, “OIL! OIL! OIL IS SEEPING FROM MOTHER MARY’S FACE”. Others crowded to the cabinet; everyone was overwhelmed. They continued to pray with tears in their eyes.

At approximately 10 pm, the members had to leave, so Mrs Hai- Hau called me on my mobile and said in shock, “Father, where are you? Please come to the centre immediately because the statue of Mary is seeping with oil.” I, with two other priests, Fr Peter Toan and Fr Joseph Truong, and about ten others raced back to the centre. When I opened the cabinet, a strong fragrance flowed out. I saw oil weeping from Mary’s head, hair, veil and Her dress was wet. Then, I carried the statue from the cabinet to the sacristy room, and placed the Statute under the Crucifix. Everyone knelt and prayed earnestly. Sr Maria Nga (RSM), Sr Hanh (LC), Sr Den (LC), and Sr Ha (LC) joined us sometime later.

During the praying of the Rosary, we continued to witness the oil seeping from the statue. However, the amazing thing was, while the oil and fragrance were seeping, the Crucifix suddenly lit up, creating an aura of light and brightness. All of us were amazed and someone said, “Oh my God, Oh my God, the Crucifix is illuminated with light.” The beautiful fragrance lingered in the air. We were utterly amazed and so joyous, because never in our lives have we seen anything so wonderful.

SATURDAY 15th May 2004: Around 8 am, I was praying and saying the Rosary with the Sisters, the President of the Vietnamese Catholic Community, Mr Vincent Vu Van Tu, the Vice-President, Mr Joseph Bui Van Thuyet, the leader of the Curia of Legio Mariae and about twenty church members, when we saw oil starting to seep from the statue again. Oil seeped from Her hair down to Her nose, also from the corner of Her right eye down to Her cheek, then collected on the chin. Ten of Mary’s fingers were shiny with teardrops of oil. Some people started to cry and once again we prayed earnestly with all our hearts.

PILGRIMAGE: As the news spread quickly, people came all day to pay homage and to see the sign. After Mass on Saturday, about 300 to 400 people came to the church.

SUNDAY 16th May 2004: The news spread further and more people came to the centre. Around midnight when Mr Ninh and Mr Cuong (son of Mr Son) were still praying, one of the wooden Rosaries I had brought back from the pilgrimage in Fatima, started to seep with oil from the Crucifix of the Rosary. Once again, the beautiful fragrance was smelt. Mr Ninh’s hand was wet with oil when he picked up the rosary beads.

MONDAY 17th May 2004: The pilgrimage continued. Around 4 pm, I had another statue of Mary (similar but smaller than the Legio Mariae’s statue) in my hand. I was kneeling and praying, offering people’s intentions, as well as my own, to Mary. I prayed for peace in our community, peace in the family, peace for the world and thanked the Lord and His Mother Mary for everything. In my prayers I especially asked Mother Mary for help with the plan of extension and renovation of our small community centre to make it more spacious for our community needs. During my prayer to Mother Mary, I asked Her, if She accepted my prayers, to give me a sign. About two minutes later, the small statue in my hands seeped with oil, which started from Her face. Then other statues of Mary and the Rosaries (brought in by church members) started to seep with oil. However, these only lasted about five minutes, before the oil was completely dried up, leaving behind a wonderful rose scent like fragrance.

TUESDAY 18th May 2004: When Maria Chi took the Rosary beads which she had placed in a box, she discovered that it was covered with oil and had the same rose scent like fragrance. This Rosary is one of the 50 Rosary beads, which I gave to her from my pilgrimage to Fatima.

WEDNESDAY 19th May 2004: During the afternoon, a picture of Jesus Christ seeped with oil. It seeped through the cardboard backing paper of the picture. Another small statue of Our Lady was also shiny with oil on the face, neck and dress. Some Crucifixes attached to Rosary beads were also covered with oil and had the same fragrance. During evening Mass, the picture of Jesus Christ seeped with oil from the hair downwards and its shiny oil was reflected in the candlelight. I held up the picture, so everyone in the congregation could view it. Oil continued to seep and was on the altar cloth. After Mass, people queued up to have a closer look.

THURSDAY 20th May 2004: None of the statues seeped with oil. However, the evidence of oil still remained on the statues and the Crucifix. News of this phenomenon travelled widely, and attracted many news reporters (television and newspapers).

The Crucifix and the Statue of Mary wept blood

FRIDAY 21st May 2004: During the week since the phenomenon, the pilgrimage continued.

At approximately 3 pm, while everyone in the sacristy room was kneeling and praying, some members looked up and saw blood seeping from Mary’s dress and under Her feet. They were in shock. I was at the rectory chapel, when Mr Cuong The Chau called me on my mobile and told me the news. I raced back to the centre. When I had reached the table, I saw several drops of blood on Mary’s dress. I knelt and prayed with everyone. About five minutes later, very slowly, blood continued to drop more and more. A small Crucifix placed nearby, also started to seep. Several drops flowed from the mouth, chin, cloth belt, hands and feet. Some of the Rosary beads placed beside the Crucifix also started to seep blood. The Vexililium, belonging to the Legio Mariae, also seeped with a large amount of oil, with several drops of blood appearing on the front and back of the Vexililium. My Rosary beads and Mr Dat’s Rosary beads also had blood on them. When I picked up the Crucifix, my hands were smeared with blood accompanied by a wonderful rose scent like fragrance. I put the Rosary beads in my pocket and held up the Crucifix for everyone to see. We prayed and prayed.

Every Friday afternoon, before Mass, we have half an hour of Exposition and Benediction. So, on this particular Friday, as a result of all that had been happening, I, along with the President, Mr Vincent Vu Van Tu, and others, Mr Thanh, Maria Chi, Mr Tinh and Mr Hong, formed a procession and carried the weeping statue and Crucifix to the chapel and placed them on the altar.

On this night Maria Bao received the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. There were about 600 people in the congregation.

During the Mass, while I was consecrating the bread and wine, to my amazement, I saw two huge drops of blood roll from the top of the Cross downwards along the vertical line of the Cross and slowly become absorbed in the wood. Also, two smaller drops of blood stopped on the horizontal line of the Cross.

Before the Proclamation of Faith, I broke down and cried. I was thrilled and shocked, never in my life having witnessed something so amazing and emotional. Several people came to stand beside me behind the altar to give me support and they also witnessed the show of blood with their own eyes. After Mass, the congregation queued up so they could have a closer look or kiss the Crucifix or the statue. All agreed that there was no smell of the odour of blood, but there was the lingering smell of the same sweet fragrance.

The Legio Mariae had another statue brought out for their weekly meeting and prayers and this also seeped with oil while they were praying. Their Vexililium still had the stain of blood on the back. One of the other Crucifixes, which I had placed beside the statue, wept with an abundance of oil.

SATURDAY 22nd May 2004: After Mass, at approximately 7:30 pm, the Crucifix that St. Tuan’s statue was holding, slowly seeped with oil and blood. This statute is located outside the community centre, at the main entrance, on the right hand side of the centre. Jesus Christ’s hands, ribs and knees were visible with blood seeping out.

While this amazing occurrence was happening outside, it was also incredible inside the chapel. The main Crucifix above the Tabernacle started to show blood seeping. Blood was slowly seeping from Jesus’ crown of thorns, the mouth, the elbows and Crucifixion marks. Everyone in the chapel was on their knees, crying, praying and praising. Everyone who witnessed this sign was overwhelmed.

The Chapel is located at: 42 Lilac St, INALA, QLD 4077, Australia.
