Weeping rosa mystica statue, Indiana

October 28, 2004 - Reported in Spirit Daily.com online newspaper. From nwitimes.com written by Paul Czapkowicz. Weeping Madonna draws faithful - Calumet city about 100 members of the faithful gathered Monday evening at St. Andrew the Apostle Church to welcome the statue of the Weeping Madonna. The statue, which is usually at Queen of Martyrs Church in Oak Lawn, was presented by the Knights of Columbus Coronata Council 3806 of Calumet City. It has become tradition that the statue is brought to St. Andrew, 768 Lincoln Ave, in May and October, the two months dedicated especially to the Blessed Mother by the Catholic Church.

Romayne Badyniak, who serves as the Ladies Auxiliary chairwoman for the Knights of Columbus in Illinois, said the statue has a local history. "The statue was commissioned by a priest in the Diocese of Chicago, and when he retired he had a chapel in his home and the statue was there. He had invited a group of priest friends to dinner and after dinner they decided they would go say a prayer in the chapel," she said. "All of a sudden, they noticed the tears coming down from the eye of the Blessed Mother," she said. Badyniak said the statue has twice shed tears.

The Rev. Michael Weidman, who celebrated the evening's prayer service and benediction, said so many are drawn to the statue of the Virgin. "Especially at a time like this, when there's so many things to pray for with the war in Iraq and elections, there's so many things that they want to ask the Blessed Mother to intercede on their behalf and offer her prayers along with ours," Weidman said. Among those who came to offer petitions to the Blessed Mother was Barbara May, a St. Andrew's parishioner. "Every time I come, it's a wonderful experience," said May, herself moved to tears.
